This apprenticeship course is for people who want to gain professional experience while training for a Level 3 Construction Contracting Operations qualification, including the Extended Level 3 BTEC in Civil Engineering.
You’ll learn all the skills you need to liaise between the engineers, management and operatives on a construction site.
You’ll also get a comprehensive insight into how construction sites operate, with hands-on experience in a variety of different roles.
Course content
The course includes training in:
- Safe working practices
- Managing excavation, plant and piling
- Laying domestic drainage
- Levelling and Setting out
- Information, quantities and communicating with others
- Building methods and construction technology
- Mathematics for civil engineers
- Carrying out pre-pour inspection and testing of concrete
- Planning and design process and environmental considerations.
Teaching and assessment
Year 1:
- 17 weeks at college; site placement.
Year 2:
- 16 weeks at college.
Year 3:
- Employer-based work experience with assessment
- Theory and workshop-based practical assessments including:
- A site visit
- A comprehensive practical test
- An assessment
- Online multiple choice test.
Qualifications you gain
- Level 3 Construction Diploma in Civil Engineering
- Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Construction Contracting Operations
- Level 2 Functional Skills (maths and English)
- Personal Learning and Thinking Skills.
Entry requirements
Work
You will be aiming for a supervisory or management role in civil engineering or construction.
Academic
Four GCSEs at grades A*-C or equivalent (must include maths, a science subject and English).
To help us assess your suitability for the course, you'll need to:
- complete a Skills Learning exercise and maths test.
Personal
- Communication skills

- Ability to carry out independent research.

If you applied for your apprenticeship through the Education and Skills Funding Agency, only applicants aged between 16 and 18 who have not been placed on a training scheme before are guaranteed full funding.
